Marble

Marble is a rock that forms when limestone is exposed to the heat and pressure of metamorphism. It is soft and can be easily damaged. It is mainly composed of calcite and often contains other minerals such as clay, mica, quartz, iron oxides and graphite.

Marble is one of the most popular building materials in the world and has been since ancient times. Already more than 2,000 years ago, marble was painstakingly cut out of the rock to cover floors, bathrooms and other surfaces with it. Because of its fine pores and smooth surface, marble hardly absorbs any water.

Marble has a lively effect and is beautiful to look at - it is also insensitive to dirt. Only in exceptional cases, however, is it frost-resistant, so it can only be used outdoors to a very limited extent.

Marble is also not well suited for kitchen and work surfaces: red wine, vinegar and other acidic substances can attack the lime contained in marble.
