Travertine

Originally, the stone travertine was called Lapis Tiburtinus - stone of Tibur. The name Tibur is the former name for the town of Tivoli in Italy, where travertine was quarried in the past. Over time, the term Lapis Tiburtinus changed into the name Travertine.

Travertine belongs to the so-called monomineralic rocks, i.e. the rock consists for the most part of one specific mineral - the main gemstone, namely calcite.

Despite its high porosity, travertine is considered frost-proof. Therefore, the stone can also be used as façade cladding in outdoor areas. Nevertheless, changes in colour and surface may occur after years. Under the influence of weathering, travertine becomes darker and more matt.

The variety of colours of travertine is enormous. There are almost white travertines, through beige colours to grey and red. There is something for every taste. Through different treatments, travertine can serve every style from modern to classic.
